I asked my grandmother to teach me the song “Na Císařské louce” about the lovers dating on this Prague island, where “only stars and poplar trees could see us, but only the line of these poplar trees remained from our love in the end”...a song by Karel Hašler, Czech songwriter, dramatist and actor, author of many popular patriotic songs known as “hašlerovky” or “hašlerky”. Some of his songs were forbidden during WW2. Hašler died in Mauthausen concentration camp in 1941 after somebody from his community denunciated him by Gestapo.
