The church is connected with the Order of Piarists, who arrived in Prague in 1752 and soon founded a succesful school nearby on Celetná. As the school was soon no longer able to accommodate the rising number of students, the Piarists purchased a piece of land on the corner of Na Příkopě and Panská that had burned during the Prussian war. First a secondary school was built, then in 1821 a church was constructed, which was consecrated in 1824. Inside is exhibited a life-size photograph of the Shroud of Turin: the cloth used on the body of Jesus after he was crucified.
