In 1977, during the visit to communist Czechoslovakia, Maxmilian van der Stoel met with philosopher Jan Patočka, to discuss Charter 77 and human rights in Czechoslovakia. This provoked harsh criticism by the Czechoslovak authorities and president Gustáv Husák cancelled scheduled meeting with van der Stoel. Jan Patočka after heavy interrogation by State police died on March 13, 1977.
