Anthill in the hollow of a tree
The nature reserves Šance on the right bank of the Vltava near Zbraslav was proclaimed on July 1, 1982, also thanks to discoveries made by the important entomologist of the 19th century, František Antonín Nickerl, who has a monument here. It is also the smaller of the two parts of the Celtic oppidum Závist and belongs to NATURA2000 program. The reason for reservation are protected species of animals and plants occurring on the rocky southern slopes above the Břežanský stream. Natural oak groves and clearings in the form of acid grasslands and heather areas are also protected.
Old half-dead sunlit oaks represent the remains of the landscape before the advent of modern forestry of the 19th and 20th centuries. They provide a home to a large number of insects that used to be common, but today lost environemt to survive.
